Beyond the Frontier: An Interview with Matt Grad

Beyond the Frontier: An Interview with Matt Grad

Originating from Scarborough Ontario, this micro-cultivator has triumphed over expectations by providing a superior product to customers throughout Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Owned by Matt Grad, licensing was first issued to Unit 15 in 2024. Quickly afterwards, Purple Octane was released to the Ontario and Saskatchewan markets. This was possible by utilizing various resources, including the OCS Flow Through Program, which allowed Matt Grad to accelerate the process of launching Purple Octane.

The cannabis cultivators employed at Unit 15 have worked alongside Matt Grad to develop high-quality strains of flower with minor cannabinoids like CBG. Furthermore, buds are trimmed by hand and packaged meticulously for customer satisfaction.

There’s an evident focus on providing customers with well-engineered products. Everything is handled in-house, from genetics to cultivation, as this facility has four compact flowering rooms and one mother room to handle operational demands.

Consumers have expressed their interest in Unit 15’s available products. As this brand continues to grow in popularity, we wanted to interview Matt Grad. Graciously, he accepted the offer to speak with Reefer Region. We’d like to thoroughly thank him for his time, and without further ado, welcome to Beyond the Frontier with Matt Grad.

What was your experience like with cannabis regulation, and getting your products directly to market?

We’re really lucky. We got into the market when it started to shift away from the larger producers and started to open up for micro-producers like myself. Licensing took a while; it was unfamiliar territory and took longer than we’d hoped. But once we received our license, our first two SKUs were accepted in the OCS Product Call with our first submission.

Now that Unit 15 Cannabis has gained its footing throughout Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, what’s the next stage of growth for the company?

As we grow, our primary focus is sustainability. We’re a small facility, and we want to build up our base. There’s still lots of opportunities for us to grow in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. So, really, we’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing. We are going to focus on quality and introducing a few more products onto the market. These are things we’ve been testing and we’re getting lots of positive feedback.

With the continuous competition that Unit 15 faces, what should consumers know about the brand and how it continues to separate itself from the rest?

Our biggest strength is the fact that we’re so small. It gives us an opportunity to focus on quality. Our four flower rooms harvest small batches every two and a half weeks. Not only are we able to provide an extra level of care for growing our plants, but also for harvesting our plants and trimming them. We’re able to make sure our products are fresh. We aren’t mass-producing, and it’s not sitting in our storage area. We’re at the point now that once it’s cured, we’re packaging it to order.

I’m sure the readers are curious. So, I’ve got to ask, are there any upcoming product launches that you’re excited about for Unit 15 Cannabis?

We have a new drop that came out this morning. One of them is the Black Cherry Soda Pre-Rolls, and they’re available in 3×0.5g packs. It’s a Sativa-dominant crossbreed of Black Dhalia and Ace of Spades. This batch tested at 29.42% THC with 2.8% Terps. It’s got a very floral, fruity terpene profile, and it’s slightly different than our purple octane.
