The Calgary City Council announced that they’ve amended a Business License Bylaw that enables permits for cannabis sales at 18+ events. This means purchasing cannabis will be legally authorized at entertainment events & trade shows.
Starting on May 15th, AGLC Licensed Cannabis Manufacturers will be allowed to apply for temporary permits. These permits can be extended based on certain rules & regulations, as outlined within the Business License Bylaw.
The Deputy Chief of Business Safety for Calgary, Michael Briegel, was quoted saying “This amendment marks a significant step forward for Calgary, aligning our local regulations with provincial changes and supporting our city’s vibrant entertainment scene.”
However, local councillors have expressed their concern for the safety of underage attendees that’ll be using fake identification. This scrutinization was quickly discredited with the argument of alcohol sales at 18+ Events.
Support? Or No Support?
Vendors will have the exclusive right to choose if 18+ events will support cannabis sales. Therefore, this bylaw isn’t being forced onto vendors. Additionally, vendors cannot have both alcohol and cannabis sales at one singular event. They’ll need to choose which is more lucrative for their business practices.
The introduction of this bylaw is expected to be slow-paced. There’ll still be more alcohol sales seen at 18+ events than cannabis. However, support is expected to grow throughout the coming years. Patience will be needed to see the maximum potential of this bylaw.
