New Zealand’s Publication, The Post, confirmed that Tilray Medical will be leaving the local cannabis market. This comes after Tilray Medical announced they’d be providing better focus onto the Australian cannabis market. It’s expected that the final day of operations for Tilray Medical NZ will be May 31, 2025.
Upon the announcement , company personnel confirmed that employees weren’t affected by this strategic decision. Anyone that was headlining operations in New Zealand will be transferred to Australia, or elsewhere. However, Tilray Medical hasn’t made any additional comments since announcing this closure. Various publications have reached out to Tilray Medical for additional information. Unfortunately, personnel working for the company are unavailable to speculate or comment on the matter.
Why Is Tilray Medical Leaving?
For those unfamiliar with the history of Tilray Medical, this company marked one of the first to launch in New Zealand. They’d be provided with an immediate license after New Zealand Legislators legalized cannabis in 2020. Since then, Tilray has continued to sell an assortment of cannabis flowers and extracts to recreational users in New Zealand.
Unfortunately, the market has recently shifted & scaled back in comparison to 2020. Other regions like Canada and Australia have proven more lucrative for Tilray Medical. As such, the decision was effectively made to terminate operations in New Zealand. It’s noted that Tilray Medical is considered an international company, with offices located throughout the world. This includes Australia, Argentina, Canada, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
